A year from my heart and my kitchen

Week 1 : Commit and Complete

By on January 7, 2017 in Heart, Original Recipes with 2 Comments

Welcome to my brain the past several days leading up to this first entry…

“This is going to be exciting, I’m ready!”

“Three years…three f-ing years you’ve talked about this!”

“Nobody cares. Why blog about it on the f-ing Internet. I must have a huge ego or maybe I’m really a narcissist?”

Wait… I should strategize this before I start… sort the recipes by category. Plan out the entire year or at least the first few months?”

“Before I start, I need a new WordPress theme. I need a new profile picture. I need a logo.”

“What if my sisters get mad?”

“I’m not a writer and my typing sucks!”

“There’s not much here really…everyone has a mother, everyone has shit…get over it.”

Wow, my inner thoughts have a potty mouth!

 FINALLY

“Kit, just start…pick the first recipe, commit and complete”

So here I AM.

1961 Mom and daughters - 52 Saturdays

Not many photos of my mom and none of me as a babay…it’s a long story, but here she is with my four older sisters.

First Things First
What is 52Saturdays and why am I doing this?

This is about my mom, hundreds of recipe cards, obesity, health, family connection, compassion, shame, and healing.

My mom (I have to hunt around for photos) was an amazing cook and hostess. She was also morbidly obese and died too young as a result.
But she left behind hundreds of handwritten recipe cards, many with personal notes.(more in the About page later)

my moms recipe cards - 52 Saturdays

For the next 52 weeks, I will select and post a recipe card in her handwriting and then spend the week converting (Kit-ifying) that recipe to a healthier version. The following Saturday I’ll post the new recipe, what I discovered, the successes and failures…along with a new recipe card selection for the next week — got it?

Some recipes may not need a lot of changes to be healthier. I might add nutrients or make it gluten free, vegan or remove processed sugars. More than likely, all ingredients will be as organic as my budget allows, but at the very least they will be natural.

I’m curious to see what happens over the next year. Maybe I’ll remember more of my childhood. Maybe I’ll talk about painful personal crap. Maybe I’ll feel closer to my mom. Maybe I’ll have a sense of humor about it. Maybe I’ll heal the shame. Maybe I’ll freak out and lose my shit. I have no clue. But for now…I am committing to start and complete this journey.

NOTE:
I am NOT a chef, nutritionist, writer, photographer or web designer (know any that want to help me?). I am a wife, mother, sister, daughter, nana, auntie and friend who uses my aprons, juicer and food processor. I am trying to live a healthy-ish lifestyle because I want to stick around to drive my husband and kids crazy a little longer. At this point the recipes are not in any particular order, nor is the site well structured…I needed to give that up to just get started. We’ll see what emerges.

So here it is…
the FIRST 52 SATURDAYS RECIPE CARD

Drumroll, please…

Double Corne Muffin With Chilies Recipe Card - 52 Saturdays

Well that was anticlimactic…

I selected this recipe because it was literally on top of the pile. Coincidentally, I had just invited kid number four and his girlfriend for dinner on Sunday and said I’d make vegetarian soup and corn muffins. See, it was meant to be. What a perfect excuse to try “Kit-ifying” the recipe.

Let’s see what I can do…see you next week!

Rick suggested I check out your latest endeavor and I’m so glad he did….I am thoroughly enjoying your kitchen adventures! Being of the “old school”, I prefer the original ingredients (except the canned soup) and hope that my descendants will discover my well-worn and grease-spattered favorites.

Thank you for visiting Barb! I hope you subscribed. I kind of want to go “old school” as well and actually have nothing against butter, cream, and real food. I’m mostly challenging myself to add nutritional value and health properties that are lacking. I love to “tweak” or customize recipes and patterns…maybe because I have a hard time following directions 😉 Love you!!!
